Ruth, Alex and Kimberley’s story

Ruth told the counsellor that she had left her partner, Alex and Kimberley’s father and moved into her Mum’s house. Her Mum had criticised this decision and felt it was a bad move.

Ruth and her children came for three sessions. It emerged that she felt her Mum was undermining the rules he had put in place for bed times. She would come home and find Kimberley very upset and having nightmares.

Everybody in the family was exhausted and upset. Ruth found it difficult to talk to her parents about this as she felt they were doing her a favour by giving the family a place to stay.

The family counsellor, Dave helped Ruth to learn a better way of communicating with her mother about bedtimes. He also helped Ruth and Alex to talk more openly about what was happening to the family. Ruth found she was then able to explain to Alex how his father fitted into the picture.

As a result of Relate family counselling Alex calmed down at school and Ruth began to feel much more confident about the future.
